The Templins: Large home renovation in Clairemont

It’s a simple story. Ten years ago, we did a front and rear addition and the Templins loved it. Fast forward a decade and the Templins wanted to add on again. Who were they going to call? Ritz Design Build. The second time around, we added on a second story and created a great room from the kitchen and family room areas by pulling out support walls.

The Templins are hardcore sports fans. (In fact they have season tickets to the Padres.) So when there’s a game, there’s a crowd over at their house. They wanted to open up their kitchen and dining room area in order to better accommodate their friends and family. We took out the support wall and engineered the build so the upper story could be safely added. And yes, we made sure the large screen TV broadcasting the game was also visible from the kitchen. A beautiful wood floor unifies the new space.

Part of the project also included a new second story. Today, the Templins have a new large master bedroom suite upstairs. If our customers are interested in a new master bedroom suite and have the luxury of building a second floor, it opens up many possibilities. With the additional footage, customers have the room to create a true sanctuary, with room for a lounge area, his and her walk-in closets, and a spacious bathroom.

A great room also takes great planning
Over the years, we’ve discovered that creating a great room from existing living spaces takes plenty of careful forethought. If you’re removing walls and expanding the floorplan, you’re creating an entirely new design. It really helps to reflect on how you really live. If you are a big sports fan like the Templins, you probably want your large screen TV to be accessible from all areas. If you look upon your home as a quiet place to reflect, making the fireplace the focal point of the room might be more your style.

See the designs before you build
As part of our bidding process, we’ll come over to your property to see it for ourselves. We’ll take extensive measurements and also ask you what you are looking for in your addition. Our designer will then render full-color 3D models of the new design for your home. You’ll be able to see how the new spaces flow together and get a real idea what it will be like to go up the new staircase and walk through the second floor. These insights will allow you to give more constructive feedback on the design and together we can create exactly the total home makeover you desire.
