Gus Arvinitas: Rear addition in Encinitas

Gus Arvinitas lives in a lovely Spanish style home just west of Interstate 5 in Encinitas. When his elderly mother came to live with his family he contacted Ritz Design Build to craft a bed and bathroom unit that extended into the backyard so his mother could have a little privacy yet still partake in family life. We took meticulous care to match the original house’s overhang and roofline.

The addition also involved reworking the backyard. Lush plantings and colored stamped concrete created a patio environment that recalls the courtyards of traditional Spanish homes. The patio provides a new outdoor living room where the entire family can spend time together. Ritz Design Build has long standing relationships with landscape architects and hardscaping professionals so we can create a remodel and exterior that complement each other.

Build out where there’s room
When you need more space, extending into the backyard can make more sense. It is often easier than adding on a second story, particularly if you are looking to live in the house into your senior years. Most homeowners choose to add onto the back of the house to minimize change the front appearance of a home. You do have to be aware of set back limits in your neighborhood.

Strengthening the connection to the outdoors
Adding onto the back of your home gives you the opportunity to reevaluate your home’s connection to the outdoors. Perhaps the last time you landscaped your yard, your kids were young and you went for the standard lawn so they could play ball. Now that they’re older, perhaps a patio or terrace would enable you to enjoy the outdoors more. You might want to add more doors or windows to open up your home and allow more sunlight to stream in. A family room could feature double French doors leading out to the patio for al fresco meals. A new master bedroom suite may enjoy the views of a private garden veiled from the rest of the yard.
